Introduction

Hi.  My name is Maddie.  I've had this site for a few years now and for the most part, the emails I get are all from people who seem to enjoy the website.  But now and then I get an email from somebody who wants to argue with me, which is fine, but I figure it I'm going to engage in debates with people, I might as well just be straightforward about my intentions and beliefs.

Personal Interpretations of Religious Scripture

For me, the most distinctive aspect of fundamentalism is the belief that there is a strictly defined "right" and "wrong".  Fundamentalists believe that they are right.  Period.  I respect that.  I think that people's beliefs often dictate how they interpret reality.  If you think something is right, it's likely that you'll find evidence to support so.   On the other hand, I find that people often completely overlook the fact that there are always people who disagree.  To me, this means that the interpretation of reality is subjective.  Two people can look at one thing and see different meanings.  My main objective in publishing this website, or my main motivation, rather, is the principal that human perspective is subjective.  What this means to me, in regard to the WBC, is that the Bible may be God's word, but every different pair of eyes that reads it is going to interpret it differently.  So I propose that maybe, just maybe, no one on earth is qualified to state that they alone know what is "right".  What is right to one person isn't necessarily right to another.  I've received quite a few emails from people telling me that the Bible is absolute; that it means one thing and nothing else.  I'm not refuting that per se, what I'm trying to say is that regardless of what its original or divine meaning is, the second it's translated by a human, that divine meaning goes through the filter of their psyche.  Unfortunately, humanity has an extensive history with boundary issues.  It seems almost impossible for us to be content with our own interpretations of reality.  It's so easy to be threatened by a different point of view that our fear drives us to impose our sense of truth on other people.

Homosexuality

Personally, I don't believe that homosexuality is wrong in any way.  I don't believe that it's impossible to believe in Jesus and not condemn gay people.  I think there is plenty of theological evidence to support the hypothesis that the Bible doesn't actually say that homosexuality is a sin, if you open to researching it.  It's not my job to judge other people's lifestyle choices.

Hell

I get a ton of emails from people who tell me who does and doesn't go to hell.  Even if I did believe in an absolute hell with absolute standards, I would think that knowledge of who is in/will be in hell is only available to the creator of such a place, ie God.

So that's what I believe.  If you disagree, I respect that.  I'm glad.  I think the world would be unbearable if we all had the same exact views on reality.  My hope is that you'll find that maybe allowing me to have my beliefs doesn't make yours wrong.
